The Individual Learning Plan

The needs of the apprentice must come first, we are aware it’s important that the learner has a clear pathway to follow and progress towards the completion of the apprenticeship.

We are also aware that currently the path towards completion has never been less clear.

We know that the ILP must start with the robust assessments of skills and behaviour already learnt, skills and knowledge needed to be learnt and assessment of functional skills. Most importantly we know that the ILP should be compiled in conjunction with the learner and employer.

This will ensure the path or curriculum will be planned in a logical way considering training that will be undertaken by the employer.

But we all know that the best ILP compiled over the last 18 have been blown apart.

However, it is important that any changes made, including target setting are clearly explained and the apprentice and the employer are aware of the changes and understand and are comfortable with those changes.

Even without the current situation we know that an apprentice’s progress is never a lovely straight line, so changes are nothing new, what has changed is that the apprentice can be more susceptible to change and may be more include, to see the new situation as a negative instead of a positive

This is where the relationship between the trainer, the apprentice and the employer are vital and needs to be a strong as ever, so that all are included and comfortable with the changes
