Safeguarding for the over 18’s

Have you ever had someone tell you about an incident with a learner that did not fit into HR issues and could have been a safeguarding issue, only to be told that the learner was over 18 and so the safeguarding process was not relevant?

Why was it not relevant, why would a training provider have a clear policy and set of processes to fit in with Ofsted’s demands that learners feel safe only for it not to be followed for learners over 18?

Ofsted’s advice is to follow the same set of procedures for the over 18’s

Learners come to us with prior experiences and attitudes, the consequence of these experiences. While I am not advocating that you dig deep into the past experiences it is important that they know that they are in a safe environment in your training provision

No matter how old or young we are, we are subject to ever-increasing incidences of online abuse and fraud, and extreme views.

It's important that we, as training providers, can inform and educate on the online environment and the fact that being part of the online environment can open us up to this type of abuse and fraud.

It has never been more important, when focusing on mental health, to be open to the possibility of past less than ideal experiences, and this could have an effect on the learning experiences. It could be that the apprenticeship programme could be covering themes that in themselves can bring uncomfortable feelings, this needs to be taken into account.

Similarly it's important that there is teaching about being safe online and ways of protecting yourself.

So embrace Safeguarding for the learners who are over 18.
